Rookwood, St Michael the Archangel Chapel

St Michael the Archangel Chapel is a Roman Catholic Church in Rookwood Cemetery. This back view of the sandstone building, which was constructed from 1886, showcases the bell tower and the bronze statue of St Michael, the Archangel. This cast statue was installed in 2007 and is the third to adorn this chapel. The original was struck by lightning and destroyed and its replacement also suffered the same fate in 1995. The new statue has been provided with a lightning arrestor to avert another strike.

That's an interesting story about the need for a lightening rod. For some reason I like round stone buildings.

Jim, could you maybe just add a link back to the 'Taphophile Tragics' meme, please?

I have an image of this chapel in my folder from my one and only visit to Rookwood. I must go through them all to check what I do have.

I have scheduled a visit to Waverley Cemetery next Sunday. Just stocking up ...

Amazing that lightning should strike this bell tower twice! A very impressive structure!
