Paddington, Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sophia is located along South Dowling Street, in the inner city suburb of Paddington. This heritage listed building, built in 1925 in the Academic Classical architectural style, is also known as The Cathedral of God's Wisdom - St Sophia. It has direct historical links with the political division of the Greek Orthodox Church, which occurred during the 1920s which has since been resolved.

  3. Very serene building and surrounds. Was it used as a parish church, do you know?

    1. When the Greek Orthodox Church split in the 1920s, this church was built as the main church of the breakaway group, the Greek Orthodox Community. So it was a parish church and still is since the groups united under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

  6. That is an imposing structure, made all the more so by the leafless trees out front. A great array of shadows!
