Pyrmont Bridge

Pyrmont Bridge crosses Cockle Bay at Darling Harbour and connects the inner city suburb of Pyrmont with the Sydney central business district. The swing bridge was opened in 1902 but has been a pedestrian bridge since 1988. It also carries an elevated monorail track which remains stationary so that the monorails can cross even when the bridge swings open for large boats. A Sydney Monorail can be seen here crossing the bridge, heading towards Harbourside station at Darling Harbour.

Bridge Lane, Donut

Bridge Lane currently features temporary Laneway Art as part of the Art and About Sydney festival. "Donut" is a sculpture by Brook Andrew which is a large inflated PVC form in the shape of a doughnut, hanging high above the lane.The striking black and white matrix is an indigenous Wiradjuri design. The shape references ancient European and Indigenous depictions of time travel and healing, and the popular contemporary notion of a ‘pie in the sky’. At the end of the laneway, is a glimpse of another piece of art, in Tank Stream Way. "Untitled" is a piece of street art or graffiti art by Barry McGee.

Museum of Sydney, Edge of the Trees

"Edge of the Trees" is a permanent sculpture in the forecourt of the Museum of Sydney. It was commissioned especially for this site in 1995 and created by Janet Laurence and Fiona Foley, an indigenous artist and a non-indigenous artist, working together. It evokes the cultural and physical history of the site, before and after 1788, when contact and colonisation took place. The name of the sculpture comes from the 1985 essay by historian Rhys Jones: "…the 'discoverer' struggling through the surf were met on the beaches by other people looking at them from the edge of the trees." It consists of 29 large pillars of sandstone, wood and steel, which correspond to the 29 Aboriginal clans from around Sydney. The materials have been recycled from lost buildings in the city with historical references carved, burnt or engraved upon them and various artefacts embedded in windows within. When you walk amongst the pillars, you can hear a soundscape of indigenous voices reciting the names of places in the Sydney region.

Museum of Sydney

The Museum of Sydney is located on the corner Phillip Street and Bridge Street. The museum is built on the ruins of Australia's first Government House, the house of Australia's first governor-general, Governor Arthur Phillip. It was built in 1788 and exposed by archaeologists in the 1980s before this museum was built. The museum explores colonial and contemporary Sydney through objects, pictures and digital media techniques. The raised metal lettering of the "Museum of Sydney" sign creates a shadow on the sandstone facade. The "Surf City" banner is for the surfing culture exhibition currently at the museum.

Museum of Sydney, Tides Turn

"Tides Turn" is a sculpture created by Peter Collins, currently located in the forecourt of the Museum of Sydney. It depicts a surging wave and is constructed from Eucalyptus sticks and steel mesh. It is part of "Surf City", an exhibition currently at the museum that shows how the surfing culture and waxheads at beaches have influenced Sydney. This sculpture was originally displayed at the "Sculpture by the Sea" exhibition in 2010 at Bondi Beach.

Bexley, Uniting Church

The Bexley Uniting Church is located in Gladstone Street, in the southern suburb of Bexley. It was built in 1925 in the Federation architectural style and has been heritage listed for its aesthetic significance as an unusual architectural church design. It was originally a Methodist Church until the Uniting Church in Australia was formed in 1977.

"Dunvegan" is a historic house located off Harrow Road, in the southern suburb of Bexley. This mansion was built in the late 19th century in the Victorian Italianate architectural style. It has been somewhat altered with the removal of an upper storey veranda but retains most of its original features. It was once part of a large estate which fronted Albyn Street and has now been incorporated into the Scalabrini Village, a retirement village formed in 1969 by the Scalabrinian Fathers, an Italian missionary order.

Barangaroo, warehouse

This former warehouse is located along Hickson Road in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. It is located opposite land which was once part of Sydney's port facilities and is now being redeveloped. This part of Hickson Road is also known as The Hungry Mile, which originated during the Great Depession. It came from harbourside workers lined up along the road opposite the wharves as foremen chose the casual labourers for the day and those without work were often left hungry.

Garden Island, Southern Surveyor

The Southern Surveyor is a ship used by marine scientists to explore and study Australia's oceans. It is operated by the CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia's national science and research agency. It is seen here moored in Woolloomooloo Bay at Garden Island, located in the eastern suburb of Potts Point. The island is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia.

Newtown, graffiti art

This graffiti art is on the back wall of the Botany View Hotel in the inner city suburb of Newtown. The hotel is located on the corner of King Street and Darley Street, with this back view from Maria Lane. Many businesses in Newtown whose walls had been targets of ugly graffiti have commissioned graffiti artists to cover those walls with their artwork. It seems to have worked in this case because the artwork or other walls of the hotel haven't been defaced since.

Hyde Park, Archibald Fountain

The Archibald Fountain is a magnificent art deco style fountain located in Hyde Park. It was designed by French artist Francois Sicard and unveiled on 14 March 1932. It features mythological characters of ancient Greece. On one of the granite plinths radiating from the central pedestal is a bronze sculpture of Theseus slaying the Minotaur which represents the sacrifice for the good of humanity. Over the last three weeks, I featured the sculpture of Apollo from the central plinth along with the sculptures of Artemis and Jason from the other granite plinths radiating from the central pedestal.

Annandale, Bicentennial Park

This curious structure was recently temporarily located in Bicentennial Park in inner west suburb of Annandale. From a distance I thought it was some sort of contemporary sculpture but as I approached it, I realised it was actually a stage used for some summer performances in the park. Any performer on that stage would not only be competing with the abstract shapes attached to the back of the stage but also the spectacular backdrop of Rozelle Bay, the Anzac Bridge and the artwork on the silos at Rozelle.

Annandale, viaduct

This viaduct is located at the back of Bicentennial Park, in inner west suburb of Annandale. The viaduct was built in 1922 to carry the freight railway line between the the Darling Harbour and Rozelle Goods Yards. It now carries the Metro Light Rail line, a tram between Central railway station and Lilyfield. The writing on the brick wall is not graffiti but a dog memorial wall. The dogs are commemorated with photographs, names and quotes at a place where dogs and their owners congregate.

Citigroup Centre

The Citigroup Centre building is located on Park Street, between George Street and Pitt Street. Built in 2000, it measures 243 metres to the top of the spire and is the tallest skyscraper in Sydney, although Sydney Tower is still the tallest structure. The Citigroup Centre building contains 41 levels of office space and The Galleries, retail space on 4 levels. It also has underground connections to Town Hall railway station and the Queen Victoria Building. The Food Hall on the lower ground level has recently been refurbished and resembles a nightclub rather than a food court, which seems to be the trend lately.

Sydney Hospital, Il Porcellino

Il Porcellino is a bronze sculpture and fountain which sits outside the historic Sydney Hospital, on Macquarie Street. The original Il Porcellino is on display in the Museo Bardini in Florence, Italy. A copy also stands in the Mercato Nuovo or Straw Market, in that city. This copy was presented to the hospital in 1968 by the Marchessa Clarissa Torrigiani in memory of her father and brother, both renowned surgeons at the hospital. The legend of rubbing the snout of Il Porcellino for good luck, provides a polished sheen.

Ashfield, warehouse

This warehouse is located on the corner of Parramatta Road and Frederick Street, in the inner west suburb of Ashfield. It was originally the Peak Freens biscuit factory that produced Vita-Weat cracker biscuits, later taken over by Arnott's Biscuits. It has now been converted to Bunnings Warehouse, a hardware warehouse chain. The old factory building had been painted in pastel colours, most recently cream, which suited the art deco style. It's good that this building with the great clock tower has found a new use but it hasn't quite been the same since it adopted the corporate colour scheme of the hardware chain.

Double Bay, Golden Sheaf Hotel

The Golden Sheaf Hotel is located on New South Head Road in the eastern suburb of Double Bay. This heritage-listed pub was built in 1936 in the art deco style. Its four bars and a rear beer garden were refurbished in 2009.

Double Bay, council chambers

This historic building is the headquarters for Woollahra Municipal Council, located on New South Head Road, in the eastern suburb of Double Bay. This building was Redleaf, a Victorian Italianate mansion overlooking Sydney Harbour, designed by the architect George Allen Mansfield and completed in 1863. It became the local government council chambers in 1947. The adjoining Redleaf Pool is named after the mansion.

This brilliant blue sky above Sydney Harbour was viewed from the viewing platform above Circular Quay railway station, beside the Cahill Expressway. The view stretches from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Overseas Passenger Terminal across to the Sydney Opera House. A ferry has just departed from Circular Quay ferry wharves heading towards Kirribilli, on the north shore.

Botanic Gardens, Summer

'Summer' is a Victorian era sculpture located in the Royal Botanic Gardens. This is one of the 'Four Seasons' statues that adorn the Palace Gardens Steps. They came from Italy in 1883 from the studio of Charles Francis Summers, an Australian-born sculptor living in Rome. The steps were their original location but later they were separated and distributed around the gardens, where some lost vital body parts and adornments. They were restored by Australian sculptor Jacek Luszczyk who recreated missing parts. The restored statues were unveiled in their original location in 2010. 'Spring' and 'Summer' are located at the top of the steps, with 'Autumn' and 'Winter' located at the bottom.

The Archibald Fountain is a magnificent art deco style fountain located in Hyde Park. It was designed by French artist Francois Sicard and unveiled on 14 March 1932. It features mythological characters of ancient Greece. On one of the granite plinths radiating from the central pedestal is a bronze sculpture of Artemis, the goddess of the wilderness, the hunt, wild animals and fertility. She is depicted here with a bow, a deer and hunting dogs. Last week, I featured the bronze sculpture of Apollo that stands on the central granite pedestal with more information about the fountain here.

St Peters, workshop

This auto electrician workshop sits on the corner of the Princes Highway and Canal Road in the inner west suburb of St Peters. This building was originally a service station, typical of a few built in the area in the inter-war period, in the Spanish Mission-style. The stucco walls are not textured and while it might have had Spanish terracotta-style roof tiles originally, it now has roof tiles from a more modern era. Interestingly, this building was on the heritage register but has recently been removed.

Barangaroo, Darling Harbour

A boat heading into Darling Harbour from Sydney Harbour, makes its way past Barangaroo. This view is from Pyrmont, which would have had spectacular views of the fireworks last night for New Year's Eve celebrations, projected from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and barges on Sydney Harbour. This was also one of the last chances to view the northern end of Barangaroo before construction begins to redevelop the site, which has already begun at the southern end.

Rookwood, Garden of Remembrance

The New South Wales Garden of Remembrance is part of the Sydney War Cemetery at Rookwood Cemetery. This fountain cascades down with a river of embedded and exposed stones encircircling this steel belvedere. The Garden of Remembrance was constructed in the early 1960s but was completely redeveloped in the late 1980s. The walls in the garden feature memorial plaques to commemorate those who served in wars.

Rookwood, St Michael the Archangel Chapel

St Michael the Archangel Chapel is a Roman Catholic Church in Rookwood Cemetery. This back view of the sandstone building, which was constructed from 1886, showcases the bell tower and the bronze statue of St Michael, the Archangel. This cast statue was installed in 2007 and is the third to adorn this chapel. The original was struck by lightning and destroyed and its replacement also suffered the same fate in 1995. The new statue has been provided with a lightning arrestor to avert another strike.

Rookwood, war memorial

This war memorial is located in Rookwood Memorial Gardens, which is part of Rookwood cemetery. This art deco monument in sandstone and granite has been dedicated to "Those who served Australia and the Empire". It features part of the "Ode of Remembrance": They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Hyde Park, Archibald Fountain

The Archibald Fountain is a magnificent art deco style fountain located in Hyde Park. The central granite pedestal features a bronze sculpture of Apollo, surrounded by other mythological characters of ancient Greece on three lower pedestals. The fan-like shape of water formed by jets rising behind Apollo, represent the rising sun. The fountain is named after J.F. Archibald, owner and editor of The Bulletin, a newspaper which later became a magazine that encouraged writers to write about Australia. He bequeathed funds to build it to commemorate the association of Australia and France in World War I. It was designed by French artist Francois Sicard and was unveiled on 14 March 1932.

Darlinghurst, mounted police

These mounted police are on patrol in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst, waiting to cross Oxford Street at Taylor Square. The forerunners of Sydney's mounted police force were formed in 1825 making them older than the Canadian Mounties and therefore the oldest continuous mounted police unit in the world. I snapped this on Christmas Eve which explains why the horses look so festive with their red antlers and blue tinsel decorations.

Darlinghurst, Christmas tree

St Mary's Cathedral, Lights of Christmas

These images on the facade of St Mary's Cathedral on College Street were part of the annual Lights of Christmas, a light projection show that runs from 8th December to 25th December. These images of the Madonna and Child featured in this show are a series of Renaissance period artworks currently on display at the National Gallery in the nation's capital city, Canberra. These Renaissance works are 15th and 16th century Italian paintings, by masters such as Bellini, Botticelli, Titian and Raphael which are normally on display at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy.

Surry Hills, Christmas stars

These flashing neon stars are part of a colourful Christmas light display along Crown Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The stars are displayed in the Southern Cross or Crux formation, a constellation that is visible from the southern hemisphere. The Southern Cross is used as a national symbol of Australia and appears on the Australian flag.

This war relic stands close to the entrance of Redfern Park near the corner of Redfern Street and Elizabeth Street. Keeping this World War Two Bofors anti-aircraft gun as a war memorial in this peaceful park has divided the community.

Redfern, Baptist Fountain

The Baptist Fountain is located in the middle of Redfern Park, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. In 1888, Charles O’Neil designed the formal landscape of Redfern Park which included an ornate fountain. It was funded by a prominent local resident and nurseryman, John Baptist, so the fountain was named the Baptist Fountain.

Redfern Park is located the inner city suburb of Redfern. The Redfern Street Gates were installed in 1891 when the park was dedicated to the people of Redfern. The gates are wrought iron and the piers are sandstone. During conservation work in 2008, the paint was removed from the stonework returning them to their original state.

This view of Circular Quay ferry wharves and a ferry is from the viewing platform above Circular Quay railway station, out across Sydney Harbour to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Narrabeen is a Freshwater Fleet Class ferry acquired in 1984, which is part of the Sydney Ferries fleet that operates services from Circular Quay to Manly.

Australian National Maritime Museum

The Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, viewed from King Street Wharf. The museum houses exhibitions that explore Australia's links with the sea and how maritime activities and issues have shaped the lives of people in Australia. Some of the outdoor exhibits can be seen from here such as the HMAS Vampire, the Cape Bowling Green Lighthouse and the Endeavour replica.

Carlton, hotel

This heritage building is located along the Princes Highway on the edge of Kogarah Park, in the southern suburb of Carlton. The building was formerly the Kogarah Hotel and now houses a Chinese restaurant. It was originally a single storey building built in 1860 in the with Victorian and Georgian architectural styles. It became a double storey building in 1890 with more Victorian architectural features.

Sydenham, park

Sydenham Green was established as urban parkland in 1999, in the inner west suburb of Sydenham. It was developed in consultation with local residents as a cultural and recreational landscape, with the aim of bringing new life to the suburb. The site became available through acquisition of aircraft noise affected homes. This map located at the entrance of the park, illustrates the former neighbourhood plan.

This sandstone memorial sculpture in Sydenham Green, a park in the inner west suburb of Sydenham. It was created by Aboriginal Artist Joe Hirst and dedicated in 1999 to the Stolen Generations. It features images of boomerangs and a couple of small reflective pools. The Stolen Generations is a term used to describe the children of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who were removed from their families by the Australian federal and state government agencies and church missions, under acts of their respective parliaments.

Five Dock, Domremy College

This fence and elaborate gate, an entrance to Domremy College, are located on First Avenue, in the inner west suburb of Five Dock. The Catholic church bought this estate in 1911 and created a private school, administered by the Presentation Order Sisters until 1997. It had developed infants, primary and secondary departments but the the infants and primary departments of the College were phased out. It is now a Catholic girls high school for Years 7 to 12.

Five Dock, Domremy College

The administration building of Domremy College is located on First Avenue in the inner west suburb of Five Dock. It had been a magnificent house built in 1882 in the Victorian Architectural style, called “Delapre” after an old Benedictine Abbey in Northampton, in England. It was renamed "Domremy" when the Catholic church bought it in 1911 and established a private school, administered by the Presentation Order Sisters until 1997.

Iron Cove Bridge

The Iron Cove Bridge crosses Iron Cove and links the inner west suburbs of Rozelle and Drummoyne. The old truss span bridge which opened in 1955 is obscured here by the new duplicated concrete box girder bridge which opened in 2011. They are bathed in the golden glow of sunset.

Rozelle, pump house

This building stands in Bridgewater Park, beside Iron Cove, in the inner west suburb of Rozelle. It was constructed in 1934 as the pump house for the former Balmain Power Station. Cool water was drawn in from the river and pumped up to the station using electronically driven pumps. The water was used to cool the condensers and was then pumped back into the river. The power station was constructed in 1909 and supplied electricity to the local area until it was decommissioned in 1976.The power station was demolished and the land was redeveloped into residential apartments and this park along the foreshore.

Oatley, Baptist Church

The Mortdale-Oatley Baptist Church is located on the corner of Boundary Road and Woronora Parade, in the southern suburb of Oatley. The Mortdale Baptist Church dates back to 1896 when it began as the Mortdale Mission, with services held in a small wooden hall known as the ‘Hut’ in Morts Road at neighbouring Mortdale. The church has been at this site in Oatley since 1919 but only became known as the Mortdale-Oatley Baptist Church in 1998. In these days of dwindling church attendances, mergers of parishes and church closures, some churches are using these sorts of trendy signs with catchy slogans and websites as advertisements to attract parishioners.

Rose Bay, St Paul's Anglican Church

The former St Paul’s Anglican Church on Newcastle Street at Rose Bay. This brick church was built in 1929 in an inter-war architectural style. The original church next door, that I showed yesterday, became the parish hall. It’s lucky that I photographed these recently since they are both due to be demolished soon, to make way for residential flats and a new childcare centre.

The former St Paul’s Anglican Church is located on the corner of Newcaslte Street and Old South Head Road in teh eastern suburb of Rose Bay. It was built in 1918 and later became the church hall when a new church was built next door in 1929. Both are now deconsecrated and the hall is currently being used as a pre-school. While researching the history of these buildings, I discovered that the church, the parish hall and two neighbouring houses are due to be demolished soon to make way for residential flats and a new childcare centre.

The Domain, sculpture

This bronze statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759–1796), stands along Art Gallery Road, in the Crescent Precinct of The Domain. It was created by Frederick Pomeroy in 1905 and stands at 2.9 metres high on a stone pedestal of Melbourne granite, mostly in the rough, with one polished course in the centre.

Dawes Point, The Wharf Theatre

Walsh Bay, on Sydney Harbour, stretches between Dawes Point and Millers Point. The Walsh Bay wharves were originally part of Sydney's port facilities. The Wharf Theatre opened in 1984 in the redeveloped warehouse building on Pier 4 and Pier 5. It contains two theatres: Wharf 1 has 339 seats and Wharf 2 has 205 seats. It is the home base for the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Dance Company. It also features The Wharf Restaurant at this end of the building.

Millers Point, Walsh Bay

Walsh Bay is on Sydney Harbour, stretching between Dawes Point and Millers Point. This view of the wharves and Sydney skyline is from a ferry on the harbour. Pier 8 and Pier 9 of the Walsh Bay wharves, were originally part of Sydney's port facilities. The old warehouses on the wharves here have been redeveloped into commercial and residential spaces.

The Rocks, Australian Hotel

The Australian Hotel is located on the corner of Cumberland Street and Gloucester Street in The Rocks. This heritage listed pub that was built in 1913 in the Edwardian architectural style. It retains most of its original features and features a unique split level bar. The original Australian Hotel was built in 1824 in George Street but was demolished during the plague to prevent outbreaks. The licence was transferred to this building, making it the oldest continuously licensed pub in the City of Sydney.

Gold Fields House

Gold Fields House is a commercial office building at 1 Alfred Street, between Pitt Street and George Street, at Circular Quay. This 25 storey building was one of the city's earliest high rise office buildings, constructed in 1966. With spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, approval has been granted for it to be soon redeveloped into apartments. This view is from the walkway beside the Cahill Expressway.

Dawes Point, Harbour View Hotel

The Harbour View Hotel is located on the corner of Cumberland Street and Lower Fort Street at Dawes Point. The original Harbour View was demolished to make way for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The pylon of the bridge now stands where the Harbour View Hotel previously stood. This hotel was constructed in 1924 and became a convenient watering hole for workers constructing the Harbour Bridge. The building was heritage listed and restored in 2001 with attention to its art deco style.

Dawes Point, Ives Steps Wharf

Ives Steps Wharf is located beside Pier One at Dawes Point, looking out on Sydney Harbour. The infamous Billy Blue operated a regular passenger boat service from Dawes Point across the harbour to Blues Point from 1830. The boat dock was approximately where the Ives Steps Wharf is now, but at that time it was called Waterman's Steps. They were renamed after Alderman Isaac Ellis Ives around 1896.

Hyde Park, garden

The remnants of a heritage listed underground public toilet is located at Hyde Park, along Park Street close to the corner of Elizabeth Street. Built in 1909, it has now been dicommissioned and filled with sand, which preserves it and allows for reuse in the future. The features above ground such as the the lamp post on a sandstone plinth and wrought iron stairway fences have been incorporated into the garden beds.

Hyde Park, Sandringham Gardens, gates

These decorative gates are part of Sandringham Gardens in Hyde Park North. Sandringham Gardens were developed to commemorate the intended visit of King George VI in 1952, which was cancelled due to his sudden death. In 1953, it was decided to dedicate the gardens as a joint memorial to the late King George V and the late King George VI. The memorial gates were unlocked on 5 February 1954 by the late King George VI's daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

Pyrmont Bridge, Darling Harbour

Pyrmont Bridge is a swing bridge that crosses Cockle Bay at Darling Harbour and connects the inner city suburb of Pyrmont with the Sydney central business district. The bridge was opened in 1902 but closed to traffic in the 1980s when freeways south of Cockle Bay were built. It reopened as a pedestrian bridge with the redevelopment of Darling Harbour in 1988. It also carries an elevated monorail with a track that remains stationary so that the monorails can continue to cross even when the bridge swings open for large boats.

Circular Quay, Deerubbun

The Deerubbun is seen here departing on a tour from Circular Quay, with the Sydney Opera House in the background. This former torpedo recovery vessel is owned by the Tribal Warrior Association, a charity that trains young people for careers in the maritime industry. The tours by Tribal Warrior Harbour Cruises teach tourists the Aboriginal names and meanings of significant Sydney landmarks. The stories of the Eora, Cadigal, Guringai, Wangal, Gammeraigal and Wallumedegal people are told and an Aboriginal cultural performance takes place on an island in Sydney Harbour.

Haymarket, Sydney Entertainment Centre, sign

The Sydney Entertainment Centre is located on Harbour Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It was opened in 1983 on the former site of the former Fruit and Vegetable Markets, which were part of Paddy’s Markets. It is one of Sydney's larger concert venues, which can accommodate over 13,000 people. Although this entertainment centre is less than thirty years old, there are plans to demolish it and replace it with a new convention centre.

Darlinghurst, Sydney Jewish Museum

The Sydney Jewish Museum is located on the corner of Darlinghurst Road and Burton Street, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. It is housed in the Maccabean Hall, which was built to commemorate Jewish men and women who served in World War One and to honour the memory of those who lost their lives. The museum is dedicated to documenting and teaching the history of the Holocaust so that these events will never be repeated. The building on the left is the NSW Jewish War Memorial Community Centre, with a stylised menorah on the façade.

Haberfield, theatre

The former Haberfield Theatre is located on Ramsay Street, in the inner west suburb of Haberfield. It was built in 1925 with the initials "HT" in the Classical Revival style facade. It replaced the Haberfield Model Pictures which had been built in 1912 and served a dual use as a roller skating rink and cinema. The new theatre was renamed Elite Theatre in 1940 and operated independently until it closed in 1970. It was converted into a supermarket and since 2009 has operated as IGA Lamonica.

The suburb has many houses and shops built in the Federation style of architecture. This building originally featured a number of shopfronts with residences above. It now houses the Dolcisimmo Italian Restaurant, a Pizzeria and a Cafe/Gelateria.

Anzac Bridge, sunset

These sunset colours over the inner west suburbs of Annandale and Leichhardt are viewed between the cables of the Anzac Bridge. The bridge was known as the Glebe Island Bridge when it opened in 1995. It was renamed the Anzac Bridge on Remembrance Day, 11th November 1998, to honour the servicemen and women who served in two world wars. The name is derived from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC).

This heritage building is located on the corner of Prince Albert Street and Bradleys Head Road, in the lower north shore suburb of Mosman. This building containing shops and residences was built in 1908. It is an example of Federation architecture, in the Arts and Crafts style. The shopping strip has been declared a conservation area for the early twentieth century architecture.

Mosman, war memorial

The Mosman War Memorial is located on the corner Myahgah Road and The Crescent at Mosman. The original World War 1 memorial is a large grey stone obelisk, dedicated in 1922. A flagpole, a small stone to commemorate World War 2 and a memorial sundial were added to commemorate subsequent conflicts. This memorial sits on the edge of Allan Border Oval, surrounded by six cypress trees.

Mosman, shops

This commercial building is located along Military Road, in the lower north shore suburb of Mosman. William Henry Smith was a speculative builder who with his partner S. H. Cabban were responsible for many buildings in the Federation architectural style in the suburb. From the late 1890s, they erected a number of shops including "The Strand" which are now part of a conservation area.

Wolloomooloo, Finger Wharf

Wolloomooloo Wharf, also known as the Finger Wharf, viewed from The Domain on the foreshore of Wolloomooloo Bay. Built in 1915, it was a working wharf until the 1970s. It was redeveloped into a hotel, apartments, restaurants and a marina in the 1990s. The newer apartments built at the end of the wharf are some of the most expensive in Sydney. The name Woolloomooloo is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word, either Wallamullah meaning 'place of plenty' or Wallabahmullah meaning a 'young black kangaroo'.

Sydenham, sub-station

This electricity sub-station is located on Unwins Bridge Road, in the inner west suburb of Sydneham. This heritage listed building was built in 1912 in the Federation Arts and Crafts architectural style, with Art Nouveau elements such as the style of lettering. Even power sub-stations were beautifully designed back then. The Municipal Council of Sydney logo, “MCS”, appears on the facade along with identification number “No 43” and the words "Electricity Sub-station" in relief, above the main doorway. An "Electricity Australia" sign and warning signs have been attached to the wall and roller shutter door.

Sydney Hospital, Macquarie Street

The North Wing of Sydney Hospital is a heritage building along Macquarie Street, opposite Martin Place. The hospital has been at this location since 1811 and yesterday celebrated its bicentenary. There is speculation on who designed the three Old Colonial Georgian buildings but it is believed that Governor Macquarie, his wife Elizabeth and John O'Hearen contributed to the design. The hospital was constructed between 1811 and 1816 by convict labour. Governor Macquarie turned to three Sydney entrepreneurs for funding: Garnham Blaxcell, Alexander Riley and D'Arcy Wentworth. It was known as the Rum Hospital because the contractors were given a limited monopoly on the distribution of spirits in the colony, in return for building it.

This old sign is embedded in the garden near the entrance of Ballast Point Park, in the inner west suburb of Birchgrove. Like parts of the artworks that stand next to it, the sign is an old relic from the former "Caltex" oil refinery that once stood on this site. The artworks seen here are "Tank 101" and "The Tank Farm", featuring parts of old rusty tanks used by the refinery.

This view of Ballast Point Park in Birchgrove shows a couple of public artworks. "Delicate Balance" by Robyn Backen, hangs over the water's edge, looking out on Sydney Harbour and Mort Bay at Balmain. The wall with a watery theme features the words "Like us, water breathes and dances to and fro between the earth and sky". It uses a dot font typeface used throughout the park to reflect the thousands of rivets and circular tanks that were once located on this former oil refinery site.

Birchgrove, Ballast Point Park, art

This is part of an artwork located in the middle of Ballast Point Park at Birchgrove, with a glimpse of the Sydney skyline seen below. "Tank 101" was created to symbolise the past working history of the site by Caltex, as an oil refinery. The original tank was the largest industrial storage vessel on this site. Panels of curved sheet steel from the old tank were incorporated in this structure with graphics using a dot font typeface to reflect the thousands of rivets and circular tanks once on the site. The text is part of a line from "The Death of Isaac Nathan" a poem by Australian poet Les Murray: "Stone statues of ancient waves, tongue like dingoes on shore".

Birchgrove, Ballast Point Park, wall

The retaining walls at Ballast Point Park at Birchgrove are made up of rubble and recycled material encased in a wire frame, from the buildings on this former oil refinery site. If you look closely, you can see that this wall features engraved padlocks. The padlocks are locked by romantics to preserve their everlasting love, with the key thrown into Sydney Harbour. The tradition seems to have originated in Italy, where couples attached padlocks to the Ponte Vecchio Bridge in Florence and threw the keys into the river. The Sydney city skyline can be seen in the distance, across the harbour.

This boat with very tall masts was moored at the marina in Woolloomooloo Bay, beside the Finger Wharf in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. The old warehouse buildings on the wharf have been converted into a hotel, apartments and restaurants. Most of the boats moored here belong to residents of these exclusive apartments.
