Rhodes, flats

This walkway along the shore of Homebush Bay and in front of blocks of flats is in the inner west suburb of Rhodes. This is another suburb along the Parramatta River that was once an industrial area but has been redeveloped into a residential and commercial area in recent years. The suburb was named after a property on the peninsula that was demolished in 1919 to build flour mills. Heavy industry in the suburb included a sawmill with timber yard from 1900, foundry manufacturing iron pipes from 1911 and a number of chemical manufacturers from 1930.

  5. It looks new, clean, and attractive. I think it will be better when the trees have grown...

  6. I like how all these new residential areas along the harbour include walks that wind in and around. Makes for good fitness even though the sense of community might be improved upon.

  10. Grace, the early property owner Thomas Walker named his house after his grandmother's house Rhodes Hall in England. There may have been some connection to the Greek island but I don't know the history there.

Bruce, that chemical company is long gone and this is a really great place to live these days.

  12. It is a great idea to make the banks of the river residential instead of industrial. It is happening here too. I would like to walk along that pathway.

  13. I have to admit that I had never seen the Sydney map as I did today: these beautiful apartments made me want to know where they are, so I learned (on the map) the river Parramatta, Breakfast Piont, Rhodes, everything you photograph.
Thank you very much, really, I like this place that you live in.
