The Rocks, Suez Canal

This sandstone paved laneway in The Rocks is known as Suez Canal. The name is supposedly a pun on "sewers canal", from the 19th century when it was an unsavoury place haunted by prostitutes and larrikins, with water cascading down when it rained. This view is from Harrington Street, as the lane narrows to George Street from the junction at Nurses Walk.

    me mum amd dad went to Sydney in their late 50s, says my mum, lets go to the red light area, everybody who visit Sydney is taken there by the tourists. ( They self travelers.)
    Mum went in and came out as fast.

    Old fashioned Chinese mum, "Did their mum teach them anything?"

    Ann, by the late 1950s, that would probably have been Kings Cross around the suburbs of Potts Point and Darlinghurst.
