Garden Island, hammerhead crane

This hammerhead crane dominates the skyline at Garden Island naval dockyard, in the eastern suburb of Potts Point. Built in 1951, it is one of only 15 still standing in the world but has not been used since 1996, so will soon be demolished. Garden Island is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia. This view across Woolloomooloo Bay, in Sydney Harbour, is from The Domain.

  1. Hi Jim, I've recently been painting this from Garden Island itself. For a couple of unusual viewpoints http://janebennettartist.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/hammerhead-crane.html

  2. Not an easy task judging from the crane's location.

  3. Too bad they didn't decide to save it somewhere else.

  4. That is one big mother I must say, never seen a crane that big. Shame it's being demolished.

  5. Interesting to read that it hasn't been taken down for so long. I think that it looks very interesting in your photo, and I'm sure it will be a lot of work to take it down one day.

  9. The cranes used in ship yards are certainly impressive! I have never seen one like this.

  10. It has a very interesting geometric form… quite sculptural really.

  11. It is different than the cranes, I am used to seeing. Very big too. Great photo!

  12. Just a plain, simple crane makes a nice sight with the sky as a backdrop.
