Chinatown, Lunar Lanterns, Dragon

  Lunar Lanterns have been installed around the city to celebrate the Sydney Lunar New Year Festival. This year is the Year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac. This Dragon lantern has been installed in the Dixon Street pedestrian mall in Chinatown, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. The zodiac symbol of the Dragon can be characterised as lucky, flexible and eccentric who is generous and powerful.

Brighton-Le-Sands, boardwalk

Chinatown, Lunar Lanterns, Ox

 Lunar Lanterns have been installed around the city to celebrate the Sydney Lunar New Year Festival. This year is the Year of the Ox in the Chinese zodiac. The Zodiac symbol of the Ox is known for its diligence, dependability, strength and determination. Two Ox lanterns have been installed in the Dixon Street pedestrian mall in Chinatown, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. They were designed by Chrissy Lau, who was inspired by the familiarity of the Japanese Maneki-neko beckoning cat which has been adopted into Chinese culture.

Lunar New Year, mural

This Lunar New Year mural has been installed in the Darling Quarter near Tumbalong Park. The artworks on opposing sides of the installation was created by Chris Yee as a modern take on classic Chinese ornamentation. The floral décor and vivid colours represent optimism and playfulness while the patterns and zodiac animals represent family, unity and strength. This side features the Ox, Horse, Dragon, Dog and Pig. The other side can be seen here.

Circular Quay, Seadeck

 The Seadeck is moored at the Eastern Pontoon wharf at East Circular Quay. The Seadeck is a 42 metre hand-crafted European super yacht comprising of three decks which can be hired for event cruises on Sydney Harbour.

Monterey, beach

 Looking across the sand at Lady Robinsons Beach, in the southern suburb of Monterey. Monterey Baths is the netted swimming enclosure in Botany Bay and the Norfolk Island Pines are in Cook Park along The Grand Parade. It's a weekday and most people are at work or at school so you can easily find a quiet spot here.

Homebush, Horse and Jockey Hotel

 The Horse and Jockey Hotel is located on the corner of Parramatta Road and Knight Street in the western suburb of Homebush. This pub was built in the 1920s in the Art Deco pub. It replaced the Half Way House Hotel which was about half way between Sydney and Parramatta on the coach track, now Parramatta Road. The new name of the pub was chosen as a reminder that the old hotel overlooked a racecourse, now long gone.

Eveleigh, mural

This mural brightens up two walls at Yerrabingin House, a community centre located along Davy Road, in the southern suburb of Eveleigh. The artwork was created by Jam Studio in 2020 and extends to several locations around the building, featuring native bees and flowers.

Rookwood, Elephant House

 This pavilion, originally known as the Anglican Rest House and later renamed the Ornamental Rest House, is located in Rookwood Necropolis, the cemetery in the western suburb of Rookwood. It was built in 1878 in the Victorian style near the former railway station. Later, staff nicknamed it the Elephant House because it looked like the original Indian Elephant House at Taronga Zoo.

Lavender Bay, boats

These boats are moored in Lavender Bay, viewed from the boardwalk in the north shore suburb of Milsons Point. The office buildings behind it are located in North Sydney.

Milsons Point, walkway

These palm trees line the walkway from Olympic Drive to the entrance of Luna Park in the north shore suburb of Milsons Point. North Sydney Olympic Pool is on the left and Milsons Point ferry wharf is on the right, The Sydney Harbour Bridge dominates the skyline and a glimpse of the Sydney Opera House across Sydney Harbour can be seen in the distance.

Cronulla, Greenhills Beach, tower

This lifeguard tower is located at Greenhills Beach, the northernmost patrolled beach in the southern suburb of Cronulla. From this angle you can't see the swimmers along the shore but you can see surfers waiting to catch waves in the ocean.

Milsons Point, Luna Park

Luna Park is an amusement park along Olympic Drive, in the north shore suburb of Milsons Point. The  heritage listed amusement park was designed in the art deco style and opened in 1935. Luna Park has temporarily closed to install nine new rides. This view shows the Helter Skelter Cafe, Volare Wave Swinger, Lighthouse and Ferris Wheel.

Milsons Point, Luna Park (Theme Day: Smile)

The entrance to Luna Park, an amusement park along Olympic Drive, in the north shore suburb of Milsons Point. Luna Park opened in 1935, on the site of the former workshops for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The heritage listed face and towers are designed in the art deco style with the gaping smile forming the entrance.

Sydenham Green, monument

  This monument is located in Sydenham Green, a recreation area which has been created around Railway Road, in the inner west suburb of Sydneham. The memorial was built in 2019 on the site of what was the first Coptic Orthodox Church in Australia. It consists of polished concrete arches joined by a stainless-steel Coptic Cross as the centerpiece. The colourful aluminum discs in the archway are representative of heaven and feature the Coptic colours. The former church was originally built in 1884 as the Tempe Park Methodist Church and in 1968 became the  St Mary and St Mina Coptic Orthodox Church. It was demolished in 2017 under the pretext that the building had become life-threatening in the wake of a fire. The foundation plaques from the original church have been installed beside it.

This corner shop and residence now houses a bridal designer's boutique on the corner of Darling Street and Nicholson Street, in the inner west suburb of Balmain East. The ivy grows rampantly at this time of year.

Petersham, All Saints Anglican Church

All Saints Anglican Church is located on the corner of Stanmore Road and Church Street, in the inner west suburb of Petersham. This heritage listed church was designed by B. Blackhouse and built in 1871 in the Gothic Revival style.

Matraville, Pioneer Memorial Park, First Fleeters Memorial

 The First Fleeters Memorial is in Pioneer Memorial Park, which is part of the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, in the eastern suburb of Matraville. It was installed here in 2016 to commemorate twelve First Fleeters reinterred here with eleven granite panels on the perimeter etched with the ships’ names, each listing the names of those who sailed with the First Fleet. This statue, which is part of the memorial, is of Admiral Arthur Phillip, first Governor of New South Wales who led the British settlement and colonisation of Australia.

Newtown, cafe

This former cafe and restaurant is located along King Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. It has gone out of business and the shopfront now remains vacant like a lot of shops since the pandemic began. The curious decorations on the power pole are a range of thongs (or flip flops) and other footwear to create some sort of strange art installation.

Marrickville, mural

This mural of kookaburras is on the rear roller doors of a warehouse along Chalder Street, in the inner west suburb of Marrickville. 'City Feathers' was created by Karen Farmer in 2019. The artwork extends to the front of the warehouse where it features magpies.

Auburn, Western District Chinese Church

The Western District Chinese Church is located along Harrow Road is located along Harrow Street, in the western suburb of Auburn. The building stands beside the Auburn Baptist Church and was originally built as the church hall. It is still also used for the church's youth group and community activities.

Bado-Berong Creek runs through Scott Park and forms a natural border between the southern suburbs of Sandringham and Sans Souci.

Belmore, amenities building

 This amenities building is located in front of the car park along Redman Parade, in the south western suburb of Belmore. This heritage listed building was built in the 1950s to match a nearby bus shelter built in the 1940s in the same style.

Homebush, railway station

A view of the Loftus Crescent entrance of Homebush railway station, in the western suburb of Homebush. The heritage listed station was built in 1855, as part of the Main Suburban Line from Redfern to Parramatta. Today it is served by Sydney Trains T2 Inner West & Leppington Line services. The lift in the centre, which connects the street with the concourse, is a recent addition built in the same style.

Homebush, railway station

The Burmese Christian Church is located along Clyde Street, in the western suburb of South Granville.  The church was originally the South Granville Baptist Church.

Museum of Contemporary Art, sculpture

This sculpture is located in the Circular Quay West forecourt of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia at The Rocks. 'Secret World of a Starlight Ember' was created in 2020 by Lindy Lee, who currently has a show at the museum celebrating her 40 year career.

Pitt Street Mall, Christmas (Theme Day: Photo of the Year)

 This Christmas star is part of the decorations installed above Pitt Street Mall for the festive season. The buildings on this side of the mall are JP Morgan, Sydney Tower and the Westfield Sydney Centrepoint shopping centre. I featured a similar photo during the year which was taken at dusk and can be seen here but this one was taken earlier in the evening.
