Botanic Gardens, Pyramid Glasshouse (Theme Day: Glass)

The Pyramid Glasshouse at the Royal Botanic Gardens houses a display of tropical plants. The glasshouse opened in 1972 and is part of the Sydney Tropical Centre which also features a glass Arc. An underground foyer links the Pyramid to the Arc.

  1. Nice shot - what do the plantings say - can't make it out.

  2. The plantings say 'Sex + Death', which I thought was a bit bizzare when I strolled past it. When I entered the glasshouse I noticed that they call their display 'Sex & Death: Orchids and Carnivorous Plants', which then made a bit more sense. It comes from a Sam Llewellyn thriller 'The Sea Garden' where he wrote: '... in gardens, beauty is a by-product. The main business is sex and death ...'

  3. I thought I was in another country for a moment! Great choice - Sex and Death - my goodness but when you explain it, it makes sense.

  4. This is a fascinating glass house and the 'Sex + Death' explanation too. Will you show us the arc sometime too? Fantastic choice for theme day!

  5. Hilda, the Arc glasshouse was a bit harder to photograph because of space restrictions and sun reflections at that time of day. I'll try and get a photo of it next time I'm down at the Botanic Gardens.
