Penshurst, West Maling

West Maling is a magnificent house located high on King Georges Road, in the southern suburb of Penshurst. It's one of the earliest examples of Queen Anne style built in Australia. These days it is used for church services by the Assemblies of God Church.

  8. It's a lovely building, a style I don't associate with Australia. But hey! I've never been there so what do I know? I love what can be learned through blogging!

  9. Popular though it was, I wonder what makes this sort of architecture Queen Anne. Great house though, isn't it?

Where is Penshurt and why did it become some popular in the Federation period?

  10. Hels, Penshurst is a southern suburb of Sydney, next to Hurstville. There are a lot of Federation houses there because the railway station opened in 1890 and development followed in that era. I don't know a lot about Queen Anne style architecture but West Maling certainly is a magnificent house.
