The Bicentennial Monument stands in Cook Park, on the foreshore of Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands. Erected in 1988, it commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in Botany Bay in 1788, the first Europeans settlers in Australia. The names of all those new arrivals are engraved on this monument flanked by a couple of old cannons.

Sorry Julie, I don't know where the canons came from. There's a few information boards around there. I don't remember if it was mentioned on those but I imagine it would be.

ReplyDeleteNice shots, pity about the cannons, they somehow don't belong with their red brick pedestals. Whty are they pointing out to sea, if anything, they would have been ponting at the natives.

Are those weapons still usable? Very adventurous look for a monument. You guys in Sidney sure got style!

ReplyDeleteWhat an unusual monument!! I hate to be picky, but the weapon things in your photo are cannon. Canons are sort of like bishops, only different. It is such an intriguing image though - a couple of old churchmen permanently stationed beside the statue of the ship! And you may certainly point out all the errors you can find on my blog!
