Sydney Conservatorium of Music

A brilliant blue sky above the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Greenway Building, designed by convict architect Francis Greenway, was constructed in 1821 as the stables for the proposed Government House of New South Wales. The gothic building with turrets was described as a "palace for horses" and portrays the romantic vision of Governor Lachlan Macquarie and the British architectural trends of the time. It was converted to a music conservatorium in 1916 and today is part of the University of Sydney.

  1. I like this J Bar - medieval and turretted. Always admire people who manage to capture the whole building (I usually find one of the 'ends' cut off).

The steeples? are a nice touch.

  6. What was the architect Francis Greenway thinking??? Not because it was unsuitable for a conservatorium but because it was WAY OVER THE TOP for the proposed Government House. *sigh* delusions of grandeur, I think.

J Bar, I am delighted that the building is being well used, at least :)

  20. What a beautiful building, pity it has been shadowed by the Opera house.

Re: The dumping of the snow. They say it is a 25 year snow. But Aussies, esp the West Aussies love it here.

  27. How fascinating that the building was once a stable. Very regal indeed! Having never been to Australia, I confess I'm quite surprised to see anything that looks like a castle there.
