Northbridge, Long Gully Bridge

The Long Gully Bridge is a sandstone and concrete arch bridge in the northern suburbs. The original suspension bridge was constructed in 1892 by a team of land developers and known as the North Sydney Bridge. The engineer responsible for the construction in the Federation Gothic style bridge with medieval motifs as embellishments, was J.E. Coyle. A tramway was extended over the bridge in 1914 but most land development came much later. The bridge was poorly maintained and needed to be replaced by a concrete arch span in 1939. The sandstone towers that were considered a landmark and tourist attraction were retained. The bridge carries Miller Street over a gully from Cammeray to Northbridge, the suburb named for its location north of this bridge. This view is from the Northbridge end, back towards Cammeray.

  6. Indeed, I have travelled over this bridge each time I visit my uncle who moved to Northbridge in 1964. It is a joy to come down Miller Street and see this spread before me. I never tire of the incongruity.

  51. I also like the bridge. Agree with the other posts about the sky - it is blue. Is it true that the bridge brings you back in time like it did for Julie's uncle in 1964

  52. Kudos to J.E. Coyle for this wonderful architectural masterpiece. I particularly like that it was built with blue skies, it really makes it pop.
I love that it reminds me of a simpler medieval time. Only last week I travelled back in time to the middle ages and was chatting to some local peasants about what they would hope bridges would be like in the 21st century - this bridge is exactly what they described. If only they could see it... they would be so impressed!

  53. I love this bridge. Another group of people that should be congratulated are the 'unsung heroes' - the engineers. A fascinating aspect of the bridge is just how high it is - it is 67metres above the park - quite a drop! Thanks again for a great post. How lovely that there are other people with similar interests.
