Homebush, Horse and Jockey Hotel

The Horse and Jockey Hotel is located on the corner of Parramatta Road and Knight Street in the inner west suburb of Homebush. Originally, this was the site of a magnificent hotel, known as the Half Way House Hotel, which burnt down and was replaced by this art deco pub in the 1920s. It was called the Half Way House Hotel because it was about half way between Sydney and Parramatta on the coach track, now Parramatta Road. The new name of the pub was chosen as a reminder that the old hotel overlooked a racecourse, now long gone.

  1. Sydney pubs have a look that Melbourne pubs do not have, even if they are from the same Deco era. I think it must be the exterior wall tiles.

    All the best

  13. Great shot of the pub. That tower in the center makes it different from most of the pubs I see around. Love your post always because I get to see buildings and places that I haven't visited yet.

  17. Jim, the original pub was called the Half-way House because it was about half-way between Sydney and Parramatta on the coach track, now Parramatta Road. The actual half-way was at Longbottom Stockade, a site now occupied by Waratah Park in Concord. This stockade was the overnight place when convicts were marched between the two towns.

  19. Re pubs vs churches in Sydney. It is nip'n'tuck. He has a list of 824 pubs - not all operational. However, in the 2008 street directory there are 4.5 pages of pubs whereas there are 5.25 pages of churches. It is immensely suburb dependent. Her has one pub left to photograph.
