South Hurstville, Community Wall

This Community Wall is located beside King Georges Road in the southern suburb of South Hurstville. The project was a partnership between Kogarah City Council and Woniora Road School to encourage people to embrace diversity, tolerance and difference. Students from the school designed a mural that celebrates Australia's multicultural society, using a collection of flags which acknowledge the culturally diverse composition of the St George area. Harmony Day is celebrated on 21st March each year in Australia, on the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is part of the Diverse Australia Program and celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of Australia and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity. I'll be featuring some more muticultural subjects this week, leading up to Harmony Day.

  1. I can't see any Scandinavian flags - do you know why they are not there?

  2. BLOGitse, I'm not sure how they chose the flags featured but I suspect it might have had something to do with the backgrounds of the students at the school. I know there are plenty of people with a Scandinavian background in Sydney but maybe not too many of them in this area.

  7. Evelyn Howard, we have a Harmony Day celebration in our workplace every year. People are encouraged to bring in some food from their background or another culture to share and wear something orange, the colour of Harmony Day.

  15. What a wonderful idea that is ! Found me my German and even the Greek flag. Hope that they are both friendly around there. A nice Tuesday for you.

  16. Yes Robert, they are all almost always very friendly. People of Greek heritage are actually one of the biggest groups in the St George area. The ancestry of parents for people in Sydney in the 2006 census were English, Irish, Chinese, Scottish, Italian, Lebanese, Greek and German.
