Darlinghurst, National Art School

The Forbes Street entrance of the The National Art School in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. This was originally the main entrance of Darlinghurst Gaol. The walls surrounding the prison were built by convicts between 1822 and 1824. The site was transferred to the New South Wales Department of Education in 1921, who adapted the buildings for use as the East Sydney Technical College and the National Art School. In 2005, the Technical and Further Education (TAFE) College moved off the site, leaving The National Art School as the sole occupant.

  2. Such an interesting history! I wonder how the students feel about it. Nonetheless, it seems once you've registered, there's no way out but graduation!

  6. Julie, I do have something from inside that I will show tomorrow. I was in a rush that day and didn't have time to take many shots, so I have to go back sometime.

  7. There is certainly some interesting architecture in that area. You can certaintly see it used to be a gaol - no doubt the students think it still is.

  8. Well, some students believe they're going to school in a prison. Love this shot!

Owh, I never been to Sydney before. Well, I can say that I never been to anywhere outside my country, Malaysia. Anyway, Sydney indeed have beautiful buildings and places. Looking at the college picture, remind me of my university's day. Check it out My Alma Mater UIAM - IIUM

  14. I went to this college in 1985 when it was known as East Sydney TAFE. I loved it - such an inspiring place to study - I felt safe and secluded within those beautiful old walls. That pic of the round building used to be the library and the womens cell block was an exhibition space for the art students. they showed us the corner where the gallows used to be as well!! such an interesting place.
