Redfern, post office

The post office in the inner city suburb of Redfern is a wonderful heritage building with a magnificent clock tower and cupola. Completed in 1882, it was designed by James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style.

  1. I have seen this style many times in late Victorian post officers, including the impressive clock tower. But I don't remember another cupola on a post office. Very cool!

  2. Playing catch up on your blog. Gotta love a beautiful post office. The little dog statue is adorable. We've got one beside the author O.Henry's monument. If I ever post on it, will let you know.

  7. Very nice building and photo. I wonder if modern day architects will ever look back on Victorian style buildings as something to aspire to. They should, IMHO.

  10. That's great. I am amazed that it's STILL a Post Office and not some sort of "take away"...

  15. But it is no longer used as a PO and they are struggling to find someone to lease it last time I wandered past.

  17. Lovely building... sadly, many buildings of this age have not been preserved in Singapore. Those that were kept for their heritage value have often being given new purposes and a somewhat contrived modern sheen. Although our General Post Office's (circa 1874) transformation into the stately Fullerton Hotel would be a notable exception.

  18. Jim, nothing has been decided as yet. I have coffee with Diane & Bill tomorrow arvo. I am proposing Sunday 16th May at midday on the roof of The Glenmore down in The Rocks. Which part, if any, of that causes you grief?

  19. Got a proposed change already, Jim.

How are you fixed for Saturday 15th May at midday at The Glenmore in The Rocks.
