The Rocks, film shoot

I stumbled across this film shoot a couple of weeks ago, which I think might have been for a television commercial. It was shot behind the Australian Steamship Navigation Company building at The Rocks, that I featured yesterday. The usually quiet Circular Quay West was transformed into a busy city street involving a number of cars and people, with a fake street light, bench, payphone and zebra pedestrian crossing markings. The set up must have taken a really long time and I saw the performers waiting around for quite a while. The cameras only rolled for about two minutes and then everybody scattered. I took these photos from Elevated Road which connects to the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

  1. That is very cool! I've seen shoots before. Lots of sitting around and not a whole lot of "lights, camera, action"

  2. This reminds me of "The Killing of Angel Street" which I saw once on tv in the UK many, many years ago. I have tried and failed to get a DVD copy for my daughter who now lives in Sydney but it seems unobtainable. I wonder, with your knowledge of Sydney and possible connections, can you help? Best wishes, Marie.

  3. we've stumbled on film or TV shoots several times in our travels. We always gawk -- and we're always amazed at how long it takes to get ready for a short few minutes of "action."

  5. elegancemaison, I'm not familiar with that movie. It's very hard to get some movies on DVD, especially the obscure or less popular ones. There are fewer and fewer music and DVD shops these days too because so many people download stuff these days. I can only suggest that you try purchasing a copy from the internet or trying a DVD kiosk that will help you search for a movie and download it onto a disk.

  6. Surreal - inviting to take more than two looks, to see whether the people are real.

    Please have a wonderful Tuesday.

  8. Interesting. Saw one in Hyde Park that turned out to be for Coke, totally different when finished to what I saw.

The shot was part of a course I did. We were trying emulate a series of shots by someone famous, might be Max Dupain but I can't find a link to the particular photos.

  9. Ann, yes, I know the Diet Coke you're talking about in Hyde Park. It's interesting to see the difference on screen. I saw them filming a scene for the BlackJack telemovies in an laneway near my work and it looked so different when I saw it on television.

  13. Lindz, I didn't see anyone familiar there. The cameras seemed to focus on the blonde girl at the front and the boy holding the two drinks.

Ewok1993, when the action started, the girl was dancing and trying to attract the attention of the boy. That's why I thought it was most likely a television commercial.

  14. It's fun to watch film shoots. I have seen them now and then around the Los Angeles area and a few other places. But...the "action" is rather slow moving, though.

  15. It reminded me of a similar experience I had in Vancouver years ago. Only the shot was to be of someone throwing himself off the station roof!
