Millers Point, Towns Place Square

This small square (above) located at Towns Place in the inner city suburb of Millers Point sits between two new apartment developments. Towns Place at Walsh Bay was once the site of Robert Towns’s whaling and trading empire. The sandstone wall of the original bond store c.1860 was rebuilt in 2006 using stone salvaged from the cellar level wall uncovered during excavations for these new blocks of flats. Stone blocks from the old warehouse have also been formed into benches in the square, along the length of the wall (below).

  3. Nice apartment buildings -- I am glad they salvaged some of the old stones and I like what they've done with them. I always hate to see so much of our history destroyed to make room for new buildings. Guess that's just part of the price. Have a great week!

  15. It looks a bit soul-less in comparison with the next door Millers Point, Jim. I think there is a different socio-economic class somehow ...

  16. I think you're right Julie. The older parts of Millers Point might be gritty but they do have more character. These new developments look flash but sometimes feel a bit clinical.
