The Rocks, police station

This building on the corner of George Street and Argyle Street at The Rocks became the police station in 1998. The Rocks local area command police station was a replacement for the small police station located opposite in George Street and another in Phillip Street. I took this photo a few months ago before construction work began for the extensions to The Museum of Contemporary Art next door on George Street extending behind this building to Argyle Street and leading down to Circular Quay.

  1. I wonder why they chose to move from one side of George Street to the other. The original building is a much nicer looking sandstone building and to the best of my knowledge, still unoccupied. Maybe it is falling down around its own ears.

  2. Julie, they closed a lot of smaller police stations around the city and created a larger Local Area Command for the remaining or new stations. The old police station at The Rocks is a great old sandstone building.

  4. There was a time, long ago, when I worked next door to the Cop Shop in Phillip Street. You could hear the drunks singing in the cells.

  6. Wasn't the old police station an art centre at one stage.

  7. Ann, I think the old police station might house a gallery or souvenir shop, of some sort. I'll try and take a photo of it, sometime soon.

  12. The police actually moved to this building in 1998 not in 1985 as you stated.
