Burwood, post office

The former post office in the inner west suburb of Burwood was built in 1892. It was designed by government architect Walter Liberty Vernon in the Victorian Italianate architectural style and is now on the National Estate Register.

  2. What a beautiful building. The old ones were built right. Great sky also.

  3. Julie and Photo Cashe, last time I drove past there it was empty and had a 'For Lease' sign on it. It would be ideal for a trendy cafe, which is what many former post offices are used for these days. Burwood has a thriving restaurant and cafe strip along Burwood Road.

  7. we don't have big old fashion Post office any more, they become post shops, which is also a corner dairy shop.

  8. It is an appealing structure. Call Starbucks and tell them it is available.

  9. Ann, a post shop with a dairy shop is an interesting combination.

Jack, Starbucks hasn't taken off in Australia and they have actually gone broke recently and shut down many shops. We have a great coffee culture in Australia and many people prefer the independent coffee shops with skilled baristas that make much better coffee.

  11. Nice blue sky. Here in the States we are beginning to think that rain and clouds are all you see in the sky.

    Please have a good Friday.

  14. Thanks for checking out my Skywatch pic. I was in Sydney and various parts of Australia 20 years ago. Beautiful country--I loved every part of it. I'd like to go back soon. Mickie

  15. For a small post office, this is a lovely piece of architecture. I'll be interested to see what kind of establishment goes in next. (I'm glad to hear the coffee culture in Australia is strong enough to keep out the generic chains.)

  16. It is really sad that this dramatic building is no longer a post office. Elizabeth Farrelly had a great article in Sydney Herald about why our post offices have closed down. I better do a post on Grafton's beautiful old post office before it is closed down and moved to a dingy shopping centre as well.

  18. A little bit of history untouched. A good example of the architecture then.

  19. Mark, I saw that article in the Sydney Morning Herald. Suburban post offices closing down are certainly in the news at the moment. The internet has taken away a lot of traditional postal business in recent years, so their business is shrinking. I must admit, apart from Chrismas cards, I can't remember the last time I posted a letter.
