Campbells Cove, Greenhouse

'Greenhouse by Joost' is a temporary eco-friendly cafe with spectacular views, currently located at Campbells Cove in The Rocks. The building was created by artist Joost Bakker and built using recycled materials with an external wall covered in pot plants. Ingredients are grown on the rooftop garden, water is collected on site, waste is recycled and the generator runs on cooking oil.

  2. I wonder what the economics are of running such a self sufficient business? Would it run at a profit I wonder.

  3. Snap! Jim. What a co-incidence!

Re Andrew's question, which he also posed on my post: I do not think this particular restaurant is other than self-aggrandisement. If you poke around (other than inside the eatery) you realise quickly that the plants are not looked after, the venue is a shambles and the sewage smells bad! I wonder who on earth allowed it to be sited where it is ...

  5. Snap! Right back at you, Julie. :)
It was about a year ago, when we all met up, that somebody mentioned that there's a good chance that some day Sydney bloggers would end up covering the same subject on the same day. I agree with what you've said. It does seem like a bit of a stunt.

  12. I just showed my students some tiny organic apples. They didn't like it until I cut a quarter for each. They said it is yummy.

    Is the food expensive?

  17. Andrew, there are plans to find a permanent location for this cafe, so it may be worthwhile staying in business but I don't know if it's completely self sufficent.

Ann, the prices on the menu seem to be about average for Sydney.

  18. I think I saw that in the early stage of construction and wondered what on earth it was. Inevitable that we occasionally "snap" each other.

I'd love to go to Sydney, my brother's lived there for the past 20 years, he visited when he was 18 and never came back!
