Circular Quay, Vivid Sydney
Circular Quay and the Sydney skyline illuminated for the annual Vivid Sydney festival which runs until this Monday night. These are just some of the colours featured in "Skyscraper Illuminati" created by 32 Hundred Lighting but there are also quite a few animated designs this year which are difficult to photograph. This view is from the Overseas Passenger Terminal looking towards the Circular Quay ferry wharves and Circular Quay railway station, rising up to the city skyscrapers.

ReplyDeleteThey make a terrific scroll-through, Jim. What are the crowds like this year? I guess the reall pulling power will be tested over this coming long weekend, which is going to be cold and wet. Pity the poor organisers. I enjoyed the first year of Vivid which I think was 2009, but mainly for the dramatic offering of fire/water in Campbells' Cove. This has all be watered (!) down this year to just another static on-going display, which is a shame.
ReplyDeleteWanted to say one more thing. About the timing of this festival in the calendar. I know the organisers wanted to fill the vacuum in winter. And winter is when it is dark earliest (duh!). But for us weak Aussies, it is cold. And winter is the rainly season for Sydney. So I would like to see this festival (it is an engineered festival, not organic) moved earlier in the calendar, like May Day.

Julie, the crowds seemed to be bigger this year, and I think partly because it was all centred around Circular Quay and The Rocks again, rather than stretching all the way up Macquarie Street, as it did last year. I liked it this way but maybe they should extend it around to Walsh Bay, to show off that part of the city too and alleviate crowding. The fire/water display was certainly bigger and more dramatic in the past two years but I suppose they can't keep doing the same thing every year and are trying different things. I'd prefer it earlier in May when it's warmer but it wasn't too bad until this week. I doubt they'll change it because their intention is to bring people into the city in winter when it's usually quiet for business.

ReplyDeleteNOt that much of a different perspective. I was pretty much in the same spot. If I could make a suggestion - watch your horizons, even if you need to straighten the shot in post production.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind it at this time of year. I do miss the lights on Macquarie Street and didn't find the ones in the Rocks this year that impressive, although they are nice.
I thought the crowds (or lack of) were good but I went on weeknights. Expect it will be really packed this weekend.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Ann, I will keep that in mind. I think I must have been using the skyscrapers as a reference point, rather than the railway station. I only noticed the tilt after I posted them here.
