Darlinghurst, mounted police

These mounted police are on patrol in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst, waiting to cross Oxford Street at Taylor Square. The forerunners of Sydney's mounted police force were formed in 1825 making them older than the Canadian Mounties and therefore the oldest continuous mounted police unit in the world. I snapped this on Christmas Eve which explains why the horses look so festive with their red antlers and blue tinsel decorations.

  11. Older than the Canadian Mounties, indeed, Jim. Older than our original Northwest Mounted Police, too, by quite a number of years. Wonderful.
I always enjoy seeing policemen on horses. We only see the RCMP on horseback when they're performing their wonderful Musical Ride but, in my home city of Vancouver, BC, the city police have a mounted unit for patrolling large parks and green spaces.
Enjoyed your photo, and the horses don't seem to mind temporary antlers.
All the best for the coming year, Jim!

  13. these are little beauties. I did not realise the service had such a long lineage. When they have an open day in Redfern barracks next, I want to take my camera along. I hope cameras are permitted.

  20. Hey they look cute in their antlers. My mum used to work near Taylor's Square at "Reception House" back in the 50's. I'm not sure what the building is used for now.
