Botanic Gardens, Opera on Sydney Harbour

"Opera on Sydney Harbour" was an event held at Mrs Macquaries Point in the Royal Botanic Gardens between 24 March and 15 April. La Traviata was performed on this purpose-built stage on Farm Cove, with the Sydney skyline in the background. The production featured a full orchestra, magnificent sets, beautiful costumes, dazzling effects, fireworks and a 9-metre chandelier suspended above a shimmering stage. Luckily, the skies remained mostly clear during the three weeks of this spectacular outdoor event.

  7. It would have been something to see. Had read about the chandelier but had no concept of how big it actually was.

  8. Wow - that chandelier is something else and, perhaps it's my crazy imagination, but that scaffolding looks like a Meccano version of elephants with black trunks! (OK, perhaps that's a bit weird, but it is late at night!) Thanks for sharing.

  11. Can I be a jeremiah here, Jim. I really don't like it when they use this part of the harbour in their attempts to take the arts to the masses. I think it devalues the arts and it most certainly devalues and helps to destroy this part of the harbour.

    End of rant ...

  15. Hmmmm, I'm not convinced this is the best way to enjoy opera, Jim, but I am a purist... I bet it was a good way to introduce opera to people who had not seen it performed before.
