Glebe, Presbyterian Church

The Abbey is a heritage listed sandstone building which was the former Presbyterian Church in the inner city suburb of Glebe. This church was originally designed by Thomas Rowe in the Victorian Academic Gothic architectural style and built in 1876 on the corner of Parramatta and Glebe Point Road. In 1927, traffic noise caused the church to be move, stone by numbered stone, to its present location in Bridge Road. It was almost demolished in the 1970s but a credit squeeze saved it from development. It had been used as a restaurant in recent years but was recently restored and put up for sale.

  2. The 1876 design was lovely.... and quite modest. I am glad it has been preserved, even if it had to be relocated brick by brick.

  6. It's the shadows lurking behind the windows that intrigue me most!

  9. I hope they find a purchaser with a good use for it. It would be a shame to lose it after people went to such effort to move it.

  10. My goodness what a job it would have been to relocate this magnificent church stone by stone.

  11. In the middle of 2009 I moved to Glebe for a short time before I got sick. This 'church' was on my way to work to USYD. I walked through the pedestrian accessway just on the Parra Rd side. In what way has it been 'done up'? I presume you mean for sale for a residence (?) There is a church here in Jersey Road - no more Moncur St - that has been converted to apartments.

  12. Do you have photos of the one here in Woollahra? If not, I will get some and show you how it looks. Enough of them sell, to be able to find interiors on the web.

  13. Julie, they cleaned the exterior and renovated the interior since it is no longer to be used as a restaurant and probably will be used as a residence. I've added a link the real estate agent's photos. The site also has development approval for additional town houses. I haven't photographed the one in Woollahra yet.
