The Rocks, Coroner's Court

The former Coroner's Court building is located along George Street at The Rocks. It was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1906, in the Federation Free Style of architecture. It also once incorporated the now demolished city morgue, which was behind the court on Circular Quay West. It was a coroner's court until 1971 and now houses a gallery and shop.

  2. Julie, there wouldn't be many of those old phone boxes around these days. In fact, I don't know if there are any outside The Rocks area.

  7. Love the splash of red, wonder if the phone box was for letting relatives know the good /bad news of the trial outcomes!

  8. And the old red phone box is still there for colour contrast! Incredible that this is untouched! It highlights the beauty of the old rambling building!

  13. Paula Scott, a coroner is a government official who investigates deaths and determines cause of death and the court holds an inquest or an inquiry.

  15. I like the lamp post and the shadows of the bare trees, which offset the heavy brickwork of the building.
