Kings Cross, The Elan

The Elan is an apartment building that stands above the William Street tunnel at Kings Cross. At street level, it fronts Victoria Street, between Kings Cross Road and Craigend Street, technically in the inner city suburb of Rushcutters Bay. This 40-storey tower which was completed in 1997 contains residential and commercial space. To construct such a building above the road tunnel, required the main transfer beams which carry the load to be an average one metre wide, five storeys high and be anchored 20 metres into the bedrock.

  18. We are seeing more and more of these skyscrapers in Melbourne. It is changing the character of the city and increasing congestion in the areas affected. I dread to think what these buildings will be like in 30 years time when the "newness" gives way to shabbiness.
