Ultimo, Powerhouse Museum

The Powerhouse Museum is located along Harris Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. This view of the museum includes the former Ultimo post office in the foreground which is on the corner of William Henry Street. The museum is located in the former Ultimo power station built in 1899 to power Sydney's electric tram system, which finished service in 1961. The Powerhouse Museum opened in 1988 and houses a collection of exhibits covering history, science, technology, design, industry, decorative arts, music, transport and space exploration.

  1. Great collection of exhibits!

The Ultimo Power Station of 1899 looks very modern. Was the building totally remodelled before the Museum opened in 1988? I might have expected something that looked more like the post office.

    1. Hels, this back section has had a contemporary extension added. I'll try and photograph some of the original building when I get a chance.

  4. I didn't recognise it from that angle. One of my favourite museums in Sydney, the other is the Museum of Sydney.

  5. Now there's a contrast between old and new and yet they seem to fit together quite well.

  10. I personally love visiting all types of museums as they are very informative at providing me with fascinating facts that I might not have known ever existed. I dropped by Sydney recently but I did not have the opportunity to visit this Powerhouse museum. The next time I am there, I will definitely make it a must to visit this place. Wonder what is in store for me.
