St Mary's Cathedral

St Mary's Cathedral is located along College Street between St Mary's Road and William Street. It is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney. This sandstone cathedral was built in the Gothic Revival style of the 19th century. The foundation stone was laid in 1868 and the cathedral was built in a number of stages with the spires only completed in 2002. This view is from the north east corner of Hyde Park.

  4. I felt certain that the spires had been there before but removed during WW2 and no money to return them until more recently.

This is the second church on this spot with the first burning down [being burnt down??]. If you go around the back, midways, just near the entrance to the crypt, you will see the only remaining part of the original which is a bit of a shell encrusted sandstone jerry-built wall.

    1. Julie, as far as I know, the spires were part of the original design but weren't built until the final stage in 2000.
