This "Rainbow Crossing" was installed across Oxford Street at Taylor Square, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. The crossing was installed on a trial basis for this year's Sydney Mardi Gras, but many people have signed a petition to make it a permanent, visual acknowledgement of the significance of Oxford Street to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. I know this theme day is supposed to be about pedestrians actually crossing but due to my aversion of having people in my photos, I didn't actually capture any shots with pedestrians on this crossing.
It may be a crossing but it's hardly "pedestrian"!

Great interpretation of the theme.
ReplyDeleteFabulous perspective Jim, I like that in the background you have the flags and the multi striped building. I would have signed the petition for sure!
ReplyDeleteRainbow crossing! They should make all zebra crossing in these colors....:)
ReplyDeleteBut nobody on it...
ReplyDeleteI picked a quiet time of the day and then had to wait a while until there were no people around.
DeleteWell, you certainly can't miss that crosswalk! :) Nice.
ReplyDeleteUn cruce de peatones muy colorido. Su diseño es muy original.
ReplyDeleteFeliz Pascua!

Wonderful back drop of that blue skies....sets off all those great colors.
ReplyDeletestill looks good!
ReplyDeletethere's folk in the background and anyway why spoil it by having folk walking on it?
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought. :)
DeleteThat is so cool!
ReplyDeleteI hope you overcome that aversion one day. People are what make our cities. Nice one for the theme day.
ReplyDeleteI have had a few shots featuring people but I'll have to try it out more often. :)
DeleteI am all in favour of public art, especially art sensitive to local tastes. But I wonder if drivers will realise that it is actually a pedestrian crossing, with all the legal obligations of every other crossing in the country.
ReplyDeleteHels, it's a traffic light controlled crossing so no danger there.
DeleteThe cheeriest crossing, and I'm impressed you managed a capture without people!
ReplyDeletePerfect. I still haven't seen this.
ReplyDeleteHappy Theme Day to you :)
Now that has to be the brightest pedestrian crossing I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteWhat a happy street !
ReplyDeleteNever did get up to see this. I really hope they keep it.
ReplyDeleteNobody would missed this road. ^)^ Love the color!

My Gilligans Island has changed over the decades. Great theme post Jim.
ReplyDeleteWho needs people when you've got such great colours that speak of many things to many people anyway? LOVE this shot!
ReplyDeleteOoh! I would love to see more pedestrian crossings like this! Absolutely wonderful choice—even without people. Besides, it's about people!
ReplyDeleteThat adds some colour to the street! I love it.
ReplyDeletei was wondering if the rainbow meant the same there as here...guess it's an international sign! what a cool idea for a crosswalk!
ReplyDeleteYes, Tanya. The rainbow flag is the international symbol for gay pride. You should be able to see that there are also rainbow banners flying in the square at the moment, which are often displayed around the streets in this area.
DeleteI've never heard of this. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday, Jim.
This is so interesting. I love your photo.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot ~ I would vote to keep the rainbow walk too! Enjoy ^_^
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting and diffeerent sight for the street. Looks very nice and if it works, great.

Gillena, we also have wombat crossings which are like zebra crossings on a large speed hump. :)

Great contribution Jim.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a rainbow crossing. I was expecting to see Wotan crossing here (Wagner's Rainbow Bridge) but that's just my music training showing. Marvelous realisation of the theme!
