Botanic Gardens, A Folly for Mrs Macquarie

This folly is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens with the city skyline as a backdrop. "A Folly for Mrs Macquarie" was created by Fiona Hall and installed in 2000 at the possible site of an original folly. The Royal Botanic Gardens were developed from 1816 under the direction of Elizabeth Macquarie, the second wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. A folly is a building or structure that is created primarily for decoration. For a view in the other direction across Sydney Harbour to Mrs Macquaries Point see here.

  1. That is true about this being a folly and therefore only decorative. If it was really to help walkers rest from the summer sun, it wouldn't be totally exposed. And they did decorative metal work beautifully :)

  2. I'm sure Mrs. Macquarie had no idea that her folly would become famous on Shadow Shot Sunday 2!

  3. This looks much like a sculpture that doubles as a seating area! Practical art? An interesting one!

  5. Was Mrs Macquaries happy with this folly or would she have prefered to have the Sydney Opera house?

    1. Mrs Macquarie wouldn't have seen this particular folly which was installed in 2000 but I'm sure she would have been happy with her original one. Not sure what she would have thought of the Sydney Opera House which was built in 1973 but I think she would have approved of such an iconic building.

  6. I've come to the conclusion that you have a lot of beautiful parks in the area that you reside. With beautiful pieces of public art that cast the most incredible shadows!
