Strand Arcade, yarn bombing

This artwork has been installed in the Strand Arcade to celebrate Wool Week. Textile artist Magda Sayeg has created an installation of two six-metre-tall fibreglass gumtrees and a lamp post wrapped in over 600 metres of colourful Australian Merino wool. This type of graffiti art which involves covering trees, lamp posts or other objects in knitting is known as "yarn bombing".

  1. Thanks for this shot, Jim. Not for the yarn bombing, just the Strand Arcade – still remembered after forty years living away from Sydney as a real touch of class. Hope it still is.

  6. I think yarn bombing is just plain wierd, though with this one being a fake tree so I guess is it art.

  13. Love the rainbowed tree trunk. Many of the trees in a park near us were covered in crocheted wool during a recent festival. There was a tag on each one indicating that they had been the subject of "crochet bombing". The term did give me a chuckle at the time.
