Walsh Bay, Vivid Sydney, Rats
"Rats" is an interactive artwork that was created for this year's Vivid Sydney Festival, which ran from 24 May to 10 June 2013. Rats references the rodent invasion that took place in the Walsh Bay area in 1900, arriving on ships from Europe and resulting in an outbreak of bubonic plague. Buildings in the area were demolished and a new rat-proof sea wall was built below the wharves from Millers Point to Dawes Point. These rats floating in the water beside Pier 8/9 in Walsh Bay are crafted out of material associated with the sea and stare out of the night water and screech, evoking an eerie feeling. It was created by Hassell Studio architects Jason Hammond, Sarah Meyer and Bridget Tregonning.

These are beautiful, don't look anything like rats, but I can see that they have created something beautiful to represent a dark and sad time.
ReplyDeleteThey were a little bit hard to make out in these shots but they did have all the rat-like features including ears, snouts, whiskers and tails.
