General Post Office (Theme Day: Façade)

The façade of the General Post Office (GPO) building, at Martin Place between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1866 to 1891 and was designed by colonial architect James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. At the centre of the 100-metre Martin Place façade is a white marble statue of Queen Victoria flanked by allegorical figures. Below themabove the main entrance, is the United Kingdom coat of arms sculpted in sandstone.

  3. Thanks for the guided "tour" of the facade; it's an impressive bldg. Very symmetical and balanced.

  4. I alway admire how in the past the desire was, even for utilitarian buildings like a post office, to have no only form and function but also beauty.

    1. The blue is in the Australian flags. You have to look closely to spot them.

  11. Beautiful architecture and I think that its appeal is due in part to the detail and also to the subtle color of stone. What a gorgeous building and you have captured it perfectly.
