This is part of a mural on the side of a shop on the corner of King Street and Darley Lane, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. The mural along the Darley Lane wall features Ganesha, a widely worshipped Hindu deity with four arms and an elephant head. He is reputed to be a remover of obstacles and is propitiated before the beginning of any new venture. He is also the god of wisdom and prudence, has a thorough knowledge of the scriptures and is a superb scribe. He is attended by a mouse at his feet.

ReplyDeleteThat's an amazing Genesha painting! Reminds me of the many, many Geneshas I saw in India in 2012 when visiting the Jaipur Daily Photo blogger for his wedding!

Leif, thanks for the heads up on Ganesha. I knew the connection to a Hindu deity but didn't know much about him. I've added some info and a link in the post.
DeleteA beautiful mural. Very creative. It would surely brighten the streets of Newtown.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful mural!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the significance of the mouse at the foot of the elephant is?
ReplyDeleteApparently, in mythology Ganesha is attended by a mouse/rat or uses one as a vahana which is a deity's mount.
DeleteI noticed "Debi" in the upper left corner. I suppose that's the artist.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your blues.

ReplyDeleteHi Jim
ReplyDeleteI visited India last year and our driver every morning before we set off would buy some flowers at the local market for the Ganesha figure that sat on the dashboards and that would protect us on the drive - than you for bring back these happy memories of my trip, exactly one year ago!

It's interesting how many times Ganesha makes an appearance in street art. Maybe it's the remover of obstacles role that appeals to street artists. Is the mouse a deity also? Looks like he got one of the eggs. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteThe mouse seems to be his attendant.
Deletenice to see this art work of Indian god in Australia here...
