Millers Point, South African War Memorial

The South African War Memorial stands in Observatory Park on Observatory Hill, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. The memorial is a sandstone block obelisk with semi-circular stone surround, faced with a bronze dedicatory name plaque and a guns dating back to this era. It is dedicated in 1940 to the volunteers from New South Wales who answered the call to who responded to the call to fight in the Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa. This location provides a great view towards Dawes Point and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

  4. I have always wondered why a] so many Australian men went off to fight in the two Boer Wars in South Africa and b] why those young men weren't memorialised very much back in Australia, after the wars ended. I found one Boer War memorial in Brisbane but am very pleased to see your Sydney memorial as well. When was it erected, do we know?

    1. The Register of War Memorials in NSW tells me 1940, so I'll add it to the post.

  7. A unique view of the graceful arches of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Although «Louis» reads a lot of military history, he did not know that Australian troops had participated in the Boer War. "Boer" is the Dutch word for "farmer" - and it was the Dutch farmers who started that fight.

As always, «Louis» appreciates your participation in Sunday Bridges.

  8. I am wondering what was first. The towers of the bridge or this war memorial. A striking resemblance in appearance. Nice shot.
