Tom Uglys Bridge, Georges River

Tom Uglys Bridge crosses the Georges River between the southern suburbs of Blakehurst and Sylvania. This view at dusk is from the southern end at Sylvania between the truss bridge on the left, which opened in 1929 and the box girder bridge on the right, which opened in 1987. The name of the bridge comes from Tom Uglys Point, on the northern end at Blakehurst, believed to be named after local resident Tom Huxley and transformed by the mispronunciation by local Aborigines.

  3. Or maybe the Aborigines really thought it was just plain ugly. :-)

  4. Gorgeous shot, and interesting story. I often wonder how some places get their names.

  12. That's a fun story on the name!
What a fine shot, Jim! The composition is excellent - the perspective of the bridges; the capture of the lights reflecting in the water. Very nice.

  13. Great shot Jim and a cool blast from the past. Drove over that bridge many times. My great aunt, Florence Westbrook used to own the Seabreeze Hotel on the Blakehurst side. My uncle, Dudley de Saxe was one of the duty managers. After her death around late 50s, it was raffled off by the Air Force Association. Would love to know if it is still there. I've lived in Brisbane since 1963 and have lost touch with many details of Sydney life. I enjoy your photos and the places you go to take them :-)

    1. I can vaguely remember the hotel there but it was redeveloped in the 1980s and replaced by apartments.
