Woolloomooloo, post box

This historic post box is located along along Cowper Wharf Road, at the corner of Forbes Street, in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo. These cylindrical cast iron red painted pillar boxes were first produced in 1861 by Triggs and Marr. They feature a letter slot towards the top and a finial of a stylised waratah with embossed acanthus leaves on top of the box.

  4. What a pity we don't still see them on every street corner Jim. Beautifully designed and it has weathered time gracefully.

    1. Yes, we only seem to see them in the heritage areas around the inner city.

  9. I used to love the red letter boxes.. they were so jazzy.
But I don't remember the stylised waratah on top. A very local touch :)

    1. Yes, they might have been a feature for post boxes in New South Wales since our state emblem is the waratah.
