Camperdown, University of Sydney, telephone boxes

These telephone boxes are located outside the Pharmacy Building, on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. The pay phone has been slowly disappearing from suburban areas so don't know how long they'll last here. The original style of these boxes would have featured glass panels all around and glass doors. To avoid vandalism, the doors have been removed and they have been modified to feature tough metal mesh on the lower panels.

  1. Some of the same measures have been put into place with pay phone booths here. They're becoming an endangered species, it seems.

  2. Public phone boxes were an important part of our social life back then. I loved the one near my parents' home :)

  4. Jim, I hardly ever see a phone booth in the State anymore....and as for phone books, many more people no longer list their phone numbers anyway. Have a good weekend.

    1. Which is making pay phones obsolete. There has been talk recently of converting some of these in the city areas to wi-fi hot spots.

  6. I can't remember the last time I saw a phone booth. I can certainly understand the modifications, too. (which is sad that they're necessary)

  7. Another interesting view of my old world. I am amazed that these telephone boxes are not in poorer condition.

    1. I think they're in good nick because they are located on the university campus. Would have been a different story out on the mean streets of the inner city.

  8. Are telephone boxes vanishing in your part of the world as they are in the U.S.?
