Darlington, The Old School

The Old School is located along Maze Crescent and is part of the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Darlington. It was originally the Darlington Public School designed by George Allan Mansfield and built in 1878 in the Gothic Revival architectural style. At the end of 1975 the school, which was in a poor state of repair, was transferred to the university. The building was renovated in 1978 for use by the Department of Music and as a theatre workshop. The small granite water fountain or bubbler near the gates is "Erected to the Memory of David and Jessie Edward, pioneer residents of Darlington".

  2. Darlington Public School must have been very small in 1878. Do we know how many class rooms there were?
It is much more refined than the huge, red brick state schools that came later.

    1. The building extends back much further which can't be seen from this angle. Not sure how many original classrooms but the school also had other buildings which were later demolished.

  8. What a cute little school. Probably a one or two teacher school. Very common in those days, but they exist no longer. Bigger seems to be seen as better these days - too big a lot of them for my taste. Give me a little country school any day.
