Ramsgate Beach, baths

Ramsgate Baths are located in the southern suburb of Ramsgate Beach. This part of Botany Bay has been used for public sea-water bathing since 1924. These timbers and bars are all that remain of the old Ramsgate Baths that were constructed in 1950 and demolished in 1973. A larger enclosure incorporated this southern side of the original baths in 1975 but most of it was replaced in 1999 by a floating net structure, consisting of plastic tubes and mesh netting.

  1. What a gorgeous beach. Seems odd to leave such a small part of the remains of those baths behind for so many years. They do make for a great photo!

  3. It looks odd to have that fencing projecting into the beach. I've never seen public baths, though, so perhaps I don't understand quite how they work.
Thanks for piquing my interest and sharing this week at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2015/04/cat-on-ladder.html

  5. I'm not sure why they would leave this on the beach. If one didn't know the story, you would just think it was an obstacle?

    1. The sand on the beach stretches a fair way back so it's not in the way. There are also plenty of places around the bay where you can swim without nets but if you want the extra security, the baths provide that.

  7. The late 19th century public baths and changing rooms were fantastic. I wonder what Ramsgate used to look like, before the baths were pulled down.

  13. How interesting. Were there bath houses there at one time? - I'd so enjoy spending time at the beach.

    1. There were only outside baths, which are netted areas for swimming which was known as bathing in the early days. A bathing pavilion was often located near these which provided a place for swimmers to change into their bathing suits.
