Chippendale, Sutherlands Hotel

Sutherlands Hotel, otherwise known as Bar Broadway, is located on the corner of Broadway and Regent Street in the inner city suburb of Chippendale. This heritage listed pub was built in 1939 in the Inter-War Functionalist architectural style.

  2. Inter-War Functionalist architecture was a tough, no-nonsense style but what a location! Large corner blocks attracted customers in both streets.

  3. Hi Jim
I worked in Sydney as a young girl in my twenties.
My first impression flying in from NZ was red bricks and tiled rooves - I thought it was wonderful!
    Love your photo of Sutherlands.

  4. Definitely has the 1930s art deco look. Wonder if they have kept the original interior.

  5. I love the detail at the corner where the top of the building steps back in order to create a kind of balcony on the third floor. Outstanding masonry work is on display here. Very nice image.

  7. Looks nice on the outside. Would like to see the inside. It doesn't looks like a pub.
