Goldsmiths Buildings

Goldsmiths Buildings is a heritage listed building located along Goulburn Street. It was built in 1888 combining Victorian Italianate with Free Classical architectural syles. It has previously housed a Union Bank and ANZ Bank branch and is now used for retail and commercial space. It is in desperate need of a refurbishment.

  1. or 1888. You covered my two favourite arts in one go - "architecture" and "gold & silver"

  3. As a Heritage building I assume it will be kept in good order and will be refurbished before too long.

  4. With the fine details in the architecture I can see this is was the built to fit a goldsmith:) Beautiful as probably his work was.

  5. So many theatres neglected everywhere. So many in decline. So much architecture faded or lost.

  9. Do you have any idea why the date '1788' is on the façade? environment.nsw.gov.au says the central figure is an angel. But no wings. Also gives date of construction 1889-90, so why 1888. Also says it was once 'Goldsmiths House'. But surely the façade has always said 'Goldsmiths Buildings'? So how could it ever have been 'Goldsmiths House'?

    1. Bert, I guess it was some sort of commemoration of the centenary of European settlement in Australia. Just like the Bicentenary in 1988, many new buildings at that time had some sort of tribute even if it actually took them longer to complete.
