Surry Hills, warehouse (Theme Day: Abandoned)

The Griffith's Teas Building is an abandoned warehouse building in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This heritage listed former warehouse is a triangular building along Wentworth Avenue and Commonwealth Street, meeting at Goulburn Street. It was designed by Kent, Budden and Greenwell and built in 1915 in the Federation architectural style for Griffith's Bros Pty Ltd, who were Tea, Coffee and Cocoa Merchants. It was owned by property moguls who had a portfolio of properties around Sydney which they planned to restore but lay abandoned or derelict for many years. They have set up a charitable foundation which has recently sold this building for redevelopment as apartments.

  1. It does seem incredible that such a big building in such a prime spot could be abandoned Jim, will be interesting to see if it will be turned into apartments as so many other old warehouses have been.

  2. It looks to be a very sturdy structure, perhaps suitable for apartments and offices. It is a shame it was abandoned. Maybe there is more to the story.

  3. Such a waste to be abandoned, hope that it would finally put to good use.

  4. From the outside, it looks to be in remarkably good condition for being abandoned. Not surprised to hear the building will be modified into apartments. Hopefully, it will be a successful project and revitalize the area.

  6. I don't know Sydney very well, but when we go there we stay with friends in Redfern. Next time, I'll have to look out for this building in Surrey Hills.
