Ultimo, Mary Ann Park

Mary Ann Park is located along Mary Ann Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. The Sydney Technical College building, which is part of the Sydney Institute of TAFE (Technical and Further Education), is on the opposite site of the road. It was designed by William Kemp and built in 1891 in the Federation Romanesque architectural style.

  1. I lecture at a Melbourne TAFE, so I feel very close to your building. But your building is lovely to look at; mine is not.

    1. The curious suburb name Ultimo came from a clerical error in a legal case against the owner of the old estate here that had prevented him being court-martialled. His offence was listed as 'ultimo' (having occurred in the previous month) when it should have been cited as 'instant' (having occurred in the same month).

  4. A lovely old building with a great purpose. I like your framing of the building with the trees.

  7. So does anyone know who Mary Ann was? I can't find any history on the park or street.
