Criterion Hotel, mural

The Criterion Hotel is located on the corner of Park Street and Pitt Street. It was designed by Copeman, Lemont and Keesing and built in 1936 in the Inter-War Art Deco style. "Peace Justice & Unity" is the mural on the side wall of Pilgrim House in Pitt Street. It was commissioned by Pitt Street Uniting Church and created by the artists of Public Art Squad: David Humphries, Rodney Monk and Ashley Taylor in 1984. In 2001, when the building was being refurbished, the mural was painted over. Public Art Squad embarked on a campaign for the mural's reinstatement, raising funds from The NSW Premier, the City of Sydney Lord Mayor, Uniting Church, Multiplex and donations from a wide range of community members. In 2003, the mural was reinstated by the original artist team.

  2. When the mural "Peace Justice & Unity" was painted over in 2001, was it some sort of right wing censorship? It looks good to me.

    1. Not sure if there was but it may have just been the building owners not appreciating the artwork.

  4. Hi Jim, I was also about to ask why the mural was painted over in 2001. But as you say: perhaps the new owners didn't like it. It sure is neat and I've enjoyed your descriptions of your local murals over the year. Happy New Year to you and yours. Greetings Jo

    1. It also suffered some vandalism across the top from graffiti taggers recently, but thankfully this was removed and the artwork was restored last year.
