The former Grazcos Wool Store building is located along Windmill Street, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. The name on the sign comes from the Graziers Co-op Shearing Company Limited which was registered in 1919. It changed its name in September 1948 to Grazcos Co-operative Ltd. It is now used for commercial space and is home to an advertising agency.
The old wool store appears to be a restaurant now. I would love to have seen it when they were selling wool, too.
ReplyDeleteLois, I did some research and it seems to be an advertising agency now.
DeleteThe sign seems to have aged well.
ReplyDeleteExcellent looking ghost sign. Good find.
ReplyDeleteOh this is a wonderful sign!

Nice one - thanks for sharing this :-)
ReplyDeleteWould love to visit this store - anything to do with wool has my attention! The name makes me smile:) Great capture, Jim!
ReplyDeleteMy father worked there as a labourer and then convenor from 1947 to 1957. Their drinking hole was The Hero of Waterloo and he told stories about ensuring he had a couple of bob to get his shout in the 6 o'clock swill, then a red rattler to Rockdale and a walk to Brighton Le Sands. He later took an office job when kids started coming. The office was at 47 Young Street Sydney. He later went to manage Gunnedah branch 1964-74 then Moree 1974-80 then was "sold" to Dalgety to fund the I'll conceived Jumbo Wool Bale concept which brought about 5he demise of Grazcos.
ReplyDeleteLovely to see this photo. My grandfather worked for Grazcos for most of his life, working as a wool classer on properties or sometimes in the office. He took my dad and uncle with him to work as shearer's cooks.
