Sydenham railway station is on the Illawarra railway line and is a junction of the Bankstown and East Hills lines, in the inner west suburb of Sydenham. It opened on 15 October 1884 as Marrickville when the Illawarra line opened to Hurstville. It was renamed Sydenham on 19 January 1895 when the Bankstown line opened to Belmore and a new railway station was built closer to the centre of Marrickville.
I wonder if Sydenham station, which opened in 1884, was designed as a job lot for all the late Victorian railway stations in our capital cities. That elongated, grand, red-brick design still looks perfect.

The style reminds me somewhat of a station in the town near where I grew up, though the colour is different.
ReplyDeleteWilliam, the colour scheme is quite striking. I can remember the buildings painted white or cream and not looking so impressive.

I think I remember this station as a creamy tone with a horizontal band of blue. I do prefer this impressive tone.
