Barangaroo, Australian Gaslight Company buildings

The heritage listed former Australian Gaslight Company buildings are located along Hickson Road, in the inner city suburb of Barangaroo. The five storey sandstone building was designed by Henry Ginn and built in 1845 in the Victorian architectural style, as an office and warehouse for the Australian Gaslight Company. It is constructed on a cliff presenting a single storey above to Jenkins Street, which is also where the stairs lead. It incorporates a former stone cottage designed in the Federation Warehouse style and built in 1899 which had a later addition, making it a two storey building. The Millers Point Gasworks operated on this site along Darling Harbour until it was decommissioned in 1921 and its above ground structures were demolished by 1925. Hickson Road was later extended through the site separating these buildings from the area which became part of Sydney's port facilities.

  1. Heisann, nice to have old buildings among the new ones, we need to take care of those from the past! ;:OD)

    1. They are dwarfed by the surrounding office and apartment buildings but it's great they have survived.

  2. Quite an eclectic mix of architecture, old and new.

  3. The five storey sandstone building looks perfect, but it is surrounded by horrible high risers :(

  4. What an interesting building! I love those stairs. You can take a good look at the building while climbing those.

  5. Very interesting, I worked in Sydney for years but did not know about this, and have only heard of Barangaroo in recent times in relation to new developments, and probably won't get back to Sydney again. Great to see some of the old buildings have been retained.

  6. I can't imagine going down that stairway. Going up the stairs might be easier for me anyways. Agreed the contrast of architecture is interesting. Good job on the photograph.
