Lismore Hotel

The facades of the former Lismore Hotel are located on the corner of Pitt Street and Wilmot Street. This heritage listed building was built in 1902 in the Federation Free Classical Style. It has also been known as the Johnston's Family Hotel, Joyce's Family Hotel and Currier's Arms Hotel. It was demolished internally and rebuilt within the original facades in 1997 as part of the Century Tower a high-rise residential development. It now houses a liquor shop on the ground level.

  1. Such an interesting building. Not sure what constitutes "Federation Free Classical Style", but it's quite different from anything I've seen here in North Carolina.

    1. Federation refers to Australia's Federation in 1901 so the style from around the turn of the century. In the rest of the world it can be either Queen Anne or Edwardian.

  3. I used to drink here in the mid 80s. It had s very “English” Style upstairs bar, up a curving wooden staircase. In 1988 they built the monorail past it. The track rsn right outside the upstairs bar windows. You would drink your beer to the creak of passing tourists on the monorail.

I still sometimes buy drinks at the bottle shop and remember better days.

  4. As far as Sydney goes Weary Traveller it was always better days. Across the road from the Lismore much of the bottom half of that block is about to disappear taking Strattons/Downing/Tudor/Bognor/Wenkes on Castlereagh with it... and other early 20th century buildings
